"Arnold Schechter," Rodney mumbled against John's neck. "Who was he?" John frowned. He'd just finished giving Rodney a blowjob so good the man had passed out and the first thing he had to say was that? "Nobody." Rodney pushed himself up on one arm. "Nobody, huh. If he's nobody, why did you mention him?" John squirmed uncomfortably on the bed. "Is there anything I can do to get you to just let it go?" Rodney thought for a moment. "No, so spill." "Fuck," John cursed. "Fine. Back in high school there was this girl, Mindy Svoboda. Cute cheerleader type, blonde and everything." "You crushed on her," Rodney surmised. "First love?" "No," John said flatly, "I didn't. This is my story, remember? Besides, she was three years older." "You were infatuated and she ignored you," Rodney said. "How sad." "She hated math," John retorted. "Anyway, there was this guy, Arnold Schechter, in the same grade as Mindy. Big history buff, did all the dorky things like chess club. Always talking history. Utter, complete nerd." "He crushed on her?" Rodney asked. "Or was this more of a school-wide disease?" "No, he didn't crush on her," John snapped. "Can I just tell the story, please?" He wanted to get it over with. "Yes, yes," Rodney replied. "So Mindy was dating Greg Thompson, the resident BMOC. Football, country-club parents. The whole nine yards," John explained. "Love triangle?" Rodney offered. "Sorry, sorry, please go on." John glared briefly at Rodney before continuing. "So, November of their senior year, Mindy gets assigned to a bio project with Arnold. Yeah, he's a nerd and she's a cheerleader, but they get along ok. At the end of the semester, they stayed friends, even though he got on everyone's nerves talking about the Punic Wars." "Go on," Rodney murmured. "Not much else happened that year; Mindy and Arnold were friendly at school, Greg and Mindy did the true love thing, everyone graduated and went off to college," John finished. When John didn't say anything for a minute, Rodney looked over at him. "That's it? That was your message to yourself?" He asked disbelievingly. "There's some deep message to a pretty girl finding out a geek isn't so bad?" "During their freshman year in college, Mindy walked into Greg's dorm room just in time to see Mr. Perfect, the love of her life, fuck some drunk chick into the mattress." "Woops," Rodney said. "Mindy went back to her own college, called her parents, and got Greg in a lot of trouble at home," John added. "About a year after that, she ran into Arnold at a conference on Greek life and academics." "Ah, the plot thickens," Rodney sniped. "So they fell in love, happily ever after?" "Not exactly," John responded. "They got into a huge argument during a panel discussion. Had it out, right there in front of a couple hundred students and a dozen faculty." "I'll bet that went over well," Rodney said amusedly. "You can say that again. They got called on the carpet by both schools. Part of their punishment was to work together to organize the next year's conference," John explained. "The story goes that the first three months of meetings were more of the same--top-of-the-lungs screaming about how she was an airheaded bimbo and how he was a pencil-necked geek." "They still used that term?" Rodney asked. "It's practically archaic." John shrugged. "Not arguing with that. So yeah, they fought like cats and dogs for a few months, and then nobody heard anything more about them." "That's not the end either, is it?" Rodney queried. "So what happened?" "I was back in town on leave a few years after I graduated and ran into Arnold's younger brother. Had a few beers, talked about our shitty high school days. He told me that Arnold and Mindy had gotten married that summer and had a kid on the way," John finished. Rodney didn't say anything for a while and when John looked over, the man had an odd expression on his face. "What?" He asked, nudging Rodney's shoulder. "So the moral of the story is Arnold Schechter is Greg Thompson?" Rodney stated. "Or, Mr. Perfect likes Greek history." John sighed again. "Yeah, something like that, Rodney." Rodney frowned thoughtfully. "I've just got one question." "Okay," John murmured. "Why couldn't Arnold have been a physics geek?" |
